First, why would you even want to become a video game tester? How much will you get paid to play video games?

The perks of becoming a professional (or part time) video game tester are great. Beyond the obvious benefit of having a job where you play video games, you will get the chance to work from home. This is a dream job, but it’s also a reality. With some effort, you can earn up to $120 an hour testing video games working from your room.

The gaming industry is at $50 billion. Making quality games is serious business, and shipping a game with a serious glitch in it will be very costly. For a game developer to pay you a few thousand dollars to test there game is pennies compared to the cost of a recall. A recall can cost in the millions of dollars, and this is something they will desperately try to avoid.

Secret 1: Where to find video game tester jobs

You are looking for alpha and beta game tester jobs. Alpha game tests are for games not yet completed, and beta game tests are for games almost fully finished.

One way to find these jobs is looking at the websites of the game developers. Constantly check them and get first dibs on any job postings. Here is a short list of some game developers:

-Microsoft

-Sega

-EA

-2K Sports

-Acclaim

Secret 2: Find out who is in charge of hiring

This is key! Don’t just send your resume into Joe Schmo’s office. Send it right to the person in charge of hiring. Include a cover letter detailing why you want to test for the company. Also talk about your experience as a gamer and your attention to detail.

Secret 3: Build a relationship with the right person

Who is the right person? The person who is going to hire the beta (or alpha) testers. You want to contact this person on a regular basis and start building a relationship. Let them know who you are, and sell them on the fact that you are a determined gamer. Your key selling point is your attention to detail.

Remember, relationships aren’t built over night. However, once you have one with the right person it can take you very far. That person can get you access to game tester jobs before they are posted. Some jobs aren’t posted and by having a relationship with someone inside the company you can get a job not available to the public.

Secret 4: Be willing to work for….

FREE! That’s right. Be willing to take your first job on for free. This great increases your chances of getting hired. Once you have your first job you have credibility and experience. This will make it a lot easier to find jobs in the future.

Besides, would it really be that bad taking on your first video game testing job for free? How often do you play video games without getting paid?
